Have you ever wanted to make a GIF? I will show you how to create a GIF using Canva in 3 easy steps in under 2 minutes. That includes recording the video and all. It took me less than that for each of the GIFs shown here.

All you need is a camera, a Canva account and your mobile device or computer.

Why You Want Your Very Own GIF

GIFs are the perfect way to add some personality to your communication. They’re fun, they’re expressive, and they can help you say what you want to say without using any words at all. Plus, they’re just plain cool.

You can create endless GIFs to express anything at all. You can do it quickly, easily and with what you already have.

How to create a GIF using Canva on Your Phone

  1. Open Canva and create a new design by tapping on the purple + button (bottom right) to create a new design.
    • Choose Custom size and create a small design (this one is 200 px by 200 px though the featured image is 600 px by 600 px)
    • Tap on “Create new design”
  2. Create the GIF.
    • Go to “Camera Roll”
    • Tap on “Videos” and choose a video OR
    • Tap on > “Camera” > “Video”
      • Record a short clip.
      • Click on “Use video”
    • Tap on the scissors to trim the video clip.
    • Tap on the three dots (on the video) to “Set video as Background.”
  3. Tap on the tray with an upward arrow (top right) > “Download” > Select GIF file type.
    • Tap on “Download” and save the GIF.

How to create a GIF using Canva on Your Computer

  1. Open Canva and create a new design by Clicking on “Create a design” (top right).
    • Choose Custom size and create a small design (this one is 200 px by 200 px though the featured image is 600 px by 600 px)
    • Tap on “Create new design”
  2. Create the GIF.
    • Click on “uploads” (on the left vertical toolbar)
    • Create a new video OR upload an existing video
    • Create a new video (if you are using the App, not the browser)
      • Click on “Record yourself”
      • Choose your camera
      • Click on “Record”
      • Click on “Done” to finish recording.
      • Click on “Save and close”
      • Click on the circle with your video > click on the three dots on the image > Choose “Detach video”
    • OR Click on Upload files and choose a video from your computer
    • Click on the rectangle with your video > click on the three dots on the image > Choose “Set Video as Background”
    • Click on the video to select it
    • Click on the scissors (top tool bar) to trim the video clip.
  3. Click on “Share” (top right)
    • Click on “Download”
    • Choose “File type” GIF and download.
